Quarries

WHITE marble is created from metamorphism of a very pure (silicate-poor) limestone or dolomite protolith. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert which were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone. These various impurities have been mobilized and recrystallized by the intense pressure and heat of the metamorphism.

The Quarries owned by the F.H.L. I. KIRIAKDIS GROUP are excavating WHITE marbles of different varieties. All are located in Makedonia – Greece, the most productive region of white marble excavation Drama – Kavala – Thassos, from where 50% of the total White marble deposit all over the world is quarried.

Tunnel excavation - Reaching into the core…

Introducing tunnel excavation to the group owned quarries in 2013, F.H.L. is not only ejecting the capacities to new levels ensuring simultaneously a much longer excavation period, but keeping also the all-around-the-year workflow up. The block outcome is protected from rainfalls, maintaining simultaneously its spotless characteristics. Furthermore it ensures a high speed and quality selectively excavation, lifting this way the average quality of the whole quarry. Furthermore the optical pollution of the environment is avoided, the flora and fauna is protected, by minimizing the usage of water, with no more usage of explosives and lubricants and heavy machinery equipment and without creating any wastage.

VOLAKAS quarry …..a production line within the mountains

Within the mountainside of Falakro mountain nearby Drama – Greece the F.H.L. I. KIRIAKDIS GROUP has managed to create a quarry of outstanding production capabilities, working all over the year in 2 shifts per day.
The F.H.L. VOLAKAS marble which is quarried there is named after the nearby village. Having an all-white background with beautiful grey or brown veins, is also why the Volakas Marble is known as the “Carrara of Greece”. With the 4 quarries that are connected as one huge, the F.H.L. I. KIRIAKIDIS GROUP has managed to control 85% of the total Volakas marble production worldwide. The marble blocks are quarried open-pit as well as underground, through tunnel excavation, which is giving unique capacities of supply. Nearly 6.000 containers with marble blocks, equal to ~ 40.000 m3, are quarried, processed, stuffed on spot and transported by the Group owned logistic company, straight from the quarry, which is connected with asphalt streets to the national road network, to Thessaloniki port, in order to be shipped out all over the world.

THASSOS marble
…..another definition of WHITE

THASSOS Marble, quarried in the homonymous island in Northern Greece, is known for many centuries all over the world for its pure sparkling whiteness and extraordinary elegance, providing pure luxury to many prestigious projects. Being a crystallic dolomite marble, it provides a higher reflection of sunlight compared to any other white marble in the world, while holding its cool temperature for a prolonged period of time, making it perfect suitable for claddings in warmer regions.
Namely, the F.H.L. I. KIRIAKIDIS GROUP holds 3 quarries in the island of Thassos, Greece from two of them, is where the F.H.L. THASSOS SNOW-WHITE is excavated and in one the F.H.L. PRINOS-THASSOS. All 3 are located in the North-East side of the island in the Vlachoudi district.
Quarried from the same deposit the Snow-White and the Prinos Marble vary in its cutting method, conserving all the physical characteristics of the marble itself untouched. The SNOW WHITE marble on the one hand has a distinguished glowing whiteness, without any crystals. The PRINOS marble on the other hand gives tenderly, grey crystal veins on its sparkling white background. The thassian marble is in general very hard and gives a perfect “mirror-like” polishing result. Combined with the huge excavation – capacity of at least 18.000m3 yearly, it constitutes it perfect for any high scale project. Starting in 2015 also here tunnel excavation, promises an exponential production outcome.

BIANCO VENATINO – a rising star

The F.H.L.-Bianco Venatino marble is quarried also in the mountainside of Falakro mountain, nearby the village Nevrokopi. Developing this quarry through open pit and tunnel excavation, it is about to become the successor of the white dolomite marble. Giving an impressive pure white background with very little light and narrow grey veins on huge blocks constitutes it perfect for floors and bathroom claddings. Through the method of tunnel excavation the F.H.L. I. KIRIAKDIS GROUP is also here about to quarry a 4 times higher outcome of the currently 5.000 m3 it gives per year.

BIANCO M – the competitor

The quarry of the Bianco M marble is the Milorema quarry, located in the Falakro mountainside. This white marble gives us a cohesive web of crystal grains connected between each other, providing an exceptional hardness and a higher resistance to friction. The light, diagonal, grey veins or the spider selection marble, which has veins like the spider web on white background, can give huge quantities on competitive prices.
